Unit Objectives
The Unit Objectives show how the Procedural Knowledge of Thinking Skills is connected to the Declarative Knowledge of the Unit-Level Questions. Each Unit Objective uses a thinking skill verb from our Thinking Skill Program to show the kind of thinking we want to foster. Notice that we create objectives for each of the three levels of thinking: Locate and Recall, Interpret and Integrate, and Critique and Evaluate. Every unit in every curriculum in our school district uses these thinking skills verbs – thus, we teach thinking and literacy all the time to all students.

Unit Objectives:
LOCATE AND RECALL:
  1. Name and locate the types of feathers on a “basic bird.”
  2. Draw and label the parts of a flight feather and describe the function of each part.
  3. Identify and draw the types of bird beaks relevant to different types of food the bird eats. Describe the function of each type of beak.
  4. Identify and draw the types of bird feet relevant to different types of food the bird eats. Describe the function of each type of feet.

INTEGRATE AND INTERPRET:
  1. Describe the relationship among all the types of feathers on a bird and its ability to fly.
  2. Classify the types of bird beaks regarding the food source.
  3. Classify the types of bird feet regarding the food source.
  4. Compare and contrast the structure of a flying bird and an airplane regarding flight.
  5. Infer the habitat and behavior or a bird by studying its external structures.

CRITIQUE AND EVALUATE:
  1. Assess the probable survival success of a “mystery bird” in a specified habitat.
